Hector Lavoe South Florida Connection  Emigrating from Puerto Rico to New York City as a teenager in 1963, the singer would go on to strike commercial gold with legendary salsa bandleader, Willie Colón. Lavoe’s work on Colón’s 1967 debut solo album, El Malo, would turn the vocalist into a star within the Hispanic community in the New York City area and beyond. The sudden fame was too much for the singer to handle. Although he went on to a fruitful solo career, Lavoe acquired a nasty drug habit, and passed away in 1993 from complications due to the AIDS virus. Check out El Cantante, a 2006 film starring Marc Anthony as Lavoe, and NUVOtv’s own Jennifer Lopez as his wife, Nilda “Puchi” Roman.
